Summary

The Congressional Research Service’s plain-language summary of what the law does.

Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act of 2017

(Sec. 2) This bill amends the Public Health Service Act to replace the authorization for a National Congenital Heart Disease Surveillance System with a requirement for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enhance and expand congenital heart disease research, surveillance, and awareness. (Congenital heart disease is a condition caused by a heart defect that is present at birth.)

HHS must award grants to nonprofit entities to conduct a study of congenital heart disease among all ages, including prevalence, health care utilization, and demographic factors. Collected information must be made available to the public.

(Sec. 3) HHS must report on research and other activities conducted regarding congenital heart disease.

Data notes

The House’s recorded vote on the final version of the law (roll call 1143 in Voteview), matched to the vote the record cites and checked against its totals. Positions are each member’s DW-NOMINATE score for that Congress, as on the Ideology page; left to right is more liberal to more conservative. Paired and announced yea votes count as yea. Lists follow the compass, most liberal first. A name links to a profile only for members of the current Congress. A law passed by voice vote or unanimous consent has no member list, and neither does a vote Voteview has not yet recorded.
