Summary

The Congressional Research Service’s plain-language summary of what the law does.

Sets forth a formula for the division and distribution of Indian Claims Commission judgments awarded to the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians and Mississippi Band of Chippewa Indians (which includes members of several Chippewa Bands on reservations or communities in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin). Exempts such funds from: (1) Federal and State income tax; and (2) being considered as income or resources for purposes of eligibility for assistance under Federal assistance programs (including the Social Security Act).
