Summary

The Congressional Research Service’s plain-language summary of what the law does.

Repeals the conflict of interest provision of the Indian Claims Commission Act of 1946 which prohibits a former Commissioner from representing or from having a financial interest in a claim of an Indian tribe on any matter within two years after such Commissioner's tenure with the Commission.

Provides that certain provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act of 1975 shall not apply to members of the Commission affected by this Act, (namely that a Commissioner would be precluded, for a period of one year after termination, from appearing as an agent or attorney for anyone, other than the United States, before a Federal court or agency in connection with any matter in which the United States is a party or is interested and which was under such Commissioner's official responsibility at any time within one year prior to termination).
